Our exclusive tour to the Valle del Bove and Serracozzo Cave from Taormina represents a high-altitude experience dedicated to the most expert and passionate hikers. During this adventure in the heart of Etna Park, we will immerse ourselves totally in wild nature amid technical trails and breathtaking views. Indeed, we will explore the lava flow tunnel known as the Serracozzo Cave and enjoy a panoramic overlook of the immense Valle del Bove, with a privileged view of Etna's Summit Craters.

The adventure begins from the evocative Rifugio Citelli, located at 1,740 meters of altitude, where the pure mountain air will prepare us for an extraordinary journey. After taking the trail, we will visit the evocative cave at 1,840 meters. Subsequently, we will continue along the ridge until we reach the Serracozzo Belvedere at about 2,150 meters, a breathtaking observation point. Furthermore, we will continue the climb along the edge of the valley until we reach 2,400 meters of altitude, then begin the descent back to the starting point.

This excursion is classified with difficulty E (Hiking), making it perfect for those who already have experience on demanding trails. In addition, the activity is reserved for participants in good physical health; in fact, it is prohibited for people with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions or hypertension. The itinerary is also suitable for children over 12 years old, while participation is not permitted for women beyond the third month of pregnancy.

Departure from Rifugio Citelli

The start of our route from Rifugio Citelli, nestled in a forest of pines and birches, is an ode to the freshness of mountain air. Here, the first rays of the sun greet us, foreshadowing the excitement of what awaits us.

Crossing the forest of birches, chestnuts and pines, and passing the ruins of an ancient sheepfold with a stone shelter, we enter the initial part of the 1971 lava flow. At an altitude of around 1,830 m above sea level, amidst the enchantment of the surrounding nature, the entrance to the Grotta di Serracozzo is revealed, located at the coordinates: Longitude 15°02'54" and Latitude 37°45'16".

Exploration of the Grotta di Serracozzo

The first stages of our excursion follow well-marked trails, revealing the evocative Grotta di Serracozzo. Among characteristic lava formations, the surreal landscape envelops us, introducing us to the unique charm of this underground environment.

This cavity, of reogenetic origin, develops partly as a lava flow gallery and partly through fractures in the rock. Its characteristic keyhole shape extends for about 350 metres, with a width varying between two and three metres. The floor of the cave is made up of layers of scoriaceous lavas, creating a striking contrast of textures. The walls of the cave have a surface that is partly matte and partly glassy, adding further charm to the exploration of this underground environment. A perfect opportunity to test our endurance for trekking on uneven terrain.

Ascent towards the Belvedere of the Valle del Bove

Continuing the climb along the CAI 723 trail, our trek will reward us with breathtaking views over the majestic Valle del Bove. This immense natural amphitheatre, sculpted by Etna's past eruptions, astonishes us with its vastness.

From the Belvedere of the Valle del Bove, specifically in the area known as the Belvedere di Serracozzo, an incredible spectacle opens up before us: the lunar landscape of the Valle del Bove, with unusual rocks and traces of past volcanic eruptions. An experience that challenges our ability to trek on uneven terrain and invites total reflection on the sheer power of nature.

Panoramic photographs and moments of contemplation make this final stage unforgettable; in the background, we can only admire the imposing summit craters that crown the volcano.
