Itinerary Etna excursion and Wine tour

Lava Front of the 2002 eruption
  • The Etna excursion and Wine tour begins aboard our comfortable SUV or minivan (up to 8 passengers per vehicle), get ready to experience a unique adventure discovering Etna and its flavors!

  • The first stop on our journey will take you to the sight of the imposing lava front of October 27 2002, the furthest point reached by the largest eruption in recent times. See the volcano’s destructive power up close, being fascinated by how a lava flow can shape the landscape.

Monti Sartorius Craters
  • We will set off again through the picturesque Ragabo Forest, following the Mareneve Road, reaching the starting point of our visit to the Monti Sartorius craters, near Rifugio Citelli. Here our adventure will continue on foot with an easy trek of about 3km, suitable for everyone, starting at an altitude of 1665m and arriving at about 1775m elevation.

  • The trail twists and turns through birch forests and typical Etna side “buttonhole” craters “bottoniera”, offering breathtaking views of Etna’s northeastern slope as well as all of eastern Sicily, Calabria and the Aeolian Islands!

  • If you are curious about the history of these craters, we invite you to check out this article dedicated to their connection with the famous volcanologist Wolfgang Sartorius.

Grotta dei Ladroni - Grotta delle Nevi (lava cave)
  • Once the hike to the Monti Sartorius craters is over, it will be time to explore an Etna volcanic cave, Grotta dei Ladroni, also known as Grotta delle Nevi. Equipped with helmets and flashlights, we will enter this lava flow tunnel, discovering its formation and ancient history.

  • The cave, located in Piano delle Donne at an altitude of 1540 meters, has a dual origin: natural and artificial. In fact, the original lava tunnel was shaped by man, enlarging part of the cave, digging steps and drilling holes in the upper wall. Note the date engraved on a rock at the entrance, 1776.

  • In the past, the Grotta dei Ladroni was also used as a natural snowbox: snow accumulated during the winter months was kept cool and resold during the summer.

Lunch and Etna DOC wine tasting
  • After exploring the natural wonders of Mount Etna in the morning, your tour will continue with an immersion in the flavors and aromas of Sicily.

  • Visit a local Etna winery and be guided by expert sommeliers to discover viticulture on the slopes of the volcano. Admire the beauty of Sicilian vineyards and hear the story of the winery and the wines it produces.

  • A tasting of fine Etna DOC wines will be paired with a lunch full of typical Sicilian dishes. You’ll end your day with a relaxing walk through the vineyard, taking in panoramic views of the Sicilian countryside and Mount Etna. An unforgettable experience that combines the charm of nature with the pleasure of food and wine discovery.
