Lava Front from the 2002 Eruption
The Etna and Wine Tour excursion begins aboard our comfortable SUV or minivan (up to 8 passengers per vehicle); get ready to experience a unique adventure discovering Etna and its flavours!
The first stop of our journey will bring you before the imposing lava front of 27 October 2002, the farthest point reached by the largest eruption in recent times. Admire up close the destructive power of the volcano, fascinated by how a lava flow can shape the landscape.
Monti Sartorius Craters
We will set off again through the evocative Bosco Ragabo, following the Via Mareneve, reaching the starting point of our visit to the Monti Sartorius craters, near Rifugio Citelli. Here our adventure will continue on foot with an easy trek of about 3 km, suitable for everyone, starting at an altitude of 1,665 m and reaching about 1,775 m.
The trail winds through birch woods and typical Etnean lateral craters arranged in a "buttonhole" pattern, offering breathtaking views of the north-eastern slope of Etna, as well as of all eastern Sicily, Calabria and the Aeolian Islands!

Grotta dei Ladroni - Grotta delle Nevi
Once the excursion to the Monti Sartorius is over, it's time to explore an Etnean volcanic cave, the Grotta dei Ladroni, also known as the Grotta delle Nevi. Equipped with helmets and torches, we'll venture into this lava flow tunnel, discovering its formation and ancient history.
The cave, located at Piano delle Donne at an altitude of 1,540 metres, has a dual origin: natural and artificial. The original lava tunnel was in fact shaped by human hands, enlarging part of the cave, carving steps and cutting holes in the upper wall. Note the date engraved on a rock at the entrance: 1776.
In the past, the Grotta dei Ladroni was also used as a natural snow pit: snow accumulated during the winter months was kept cool and sold again during the summer.
