2002 eruption lava front
The Etna sunset tour at 2000 metres begins in an SUV or minivan (up to 8 passengers per vehicle). The first step of our tour is an off-road drive up to the lava front of 27/10/2002, the biggest eruption in the last twenty years, which destroyed the ski resort of Piano Provenzana and part of the Ragabo pine forest. Here we will see how far this impressive eruption reached, after which our excursion will take you up to the craters that gave origin to it.
Piano Provenzana - 2002 Craters
Passing through the Ragabo forest, we will travel along the Mareneve road to Piano Provenzana at an altitude of 1800m, where our hike to the 2002 craters will continue on foot.
This is a fairly easy trek, our expert always takes into account the group by taking breaks and maintaining a pace suitable for everyone. During the trekking we will cross ancient lava flows and a lava canyon, we will walk on a high-altitude plateau where nature is beginning to regrow, we will also be able to admire the 1923 craters by passing near their base.
At an altitude of 2050m we will walk along the edges of the 2002 craters until we reach a vantage point with a view (weather permitting) of the east coast of Sicily, the Aeolian Islands, the Ionian Sea and the Strait of Messina, ending with Calabria.
This is the backdrop in which we will stop to admire an evocative sunset on Mount Etna at high altitude.
