EXCURSIONS TO MOUNT ETNA AND THE ALCANTARA GORGES
Mount Etna is about 3350 meters high. It’s possible to visit the volcano from both the south side (Rifugio Sapienza) and the north side (Piano Provenzana). The north side is known for its ruggedness and the contrast between nature, forest and lava flows.
Etna Nord – Piano Provenzana
The most important lava flow of recent times that can be visited is the one from the 2002 eruption. The craters that gave rise to this eruption are located at an altitude of about 2100 meters.
Other beautiful craters that can be visited are the Sartorius Mountains, at an altitude of 1650 meters. These craters date back to 1865. Because of the devastating 2002 eruption, the northern side is much less touristy. They are still rebuilding. However, this means a unique and robust view of Etna volcano away from mass tourism.
Etna Sud – Rifugio Sapienza
Etna Sud, on the other hand, is very touristy. This is also because Etna’s cable car is located here. This cable car takes you from Rifugio Sapienza at 1900 meters to 2500 meters on Mount Etna volcano.
Alcantara Gorges
The Alcantara Gorges are a beautiful natural area that you should definitely visit if you are in the region. The Gorges are just a stone’s throw from Mount Etna and Taormina. The Alcantara Gorges are like a canyon of lava rock into which frozen water flows. Various excursions are organized in the river, such as sightseeing, body rafting or trekking.
