Itinerary Etna Trekking Tour half-day
Lava Front of the 2002 eruption
Climb aboard a comfortable SUV or minivan (up to 8 passengers per vehicle) and immerse yourself in Etna’s wilderness. The first leg of the half-day Etna trekking tour will bring you face to face with the lava front of October 27 2002, the largest eruption in recent times. We will visit the farthest point reached by this immense lava flow that destroyed Piano Provenzana and part of the Ragabo Pine Forest.
Monti Sartorius Craters
We will set off again through the picturesque Ragabo Forest, following the Mareneve Road, until we reach the starting point of the Monti Sartorius Craters trekking trail, near Rifugio Citelli. Our hike will resume on foot, we will move along a typical Etnean path surrounded by nature, among centuries-old birch trees and fascinating “buttonhole” side craters: the Sartorius Mountains.
This is a walk of easy difficulty, suitable for everyone. The trail, about 3km long with an elevation gain of 110 meters, winds along the northeastern slope of Etna, taking us from an elevation of 1665m to about 1775m above sea level. You will enjoy unique views of the volcano and the majesty of the landscape around us.

Grotta dei Ladroni - Grotta delle Nevi (lava cave)
Concluding our fun excursion to the Sartorius Mountains, we will immerse ourselves in Etna’s fascinating history by exploring the Grotta dei Ladroni, also known as the Grotta delle Nevi. Equipped with helmets and flashlights, we will venture into this lava flow tunnel, a true journey through time to discover the formation of the volcano.
The cave is located in Piano delle Donne at an altitude of 1540m. The history of the “Cave of Thieves” is also linked to human resourcefulness, as evidenced by the date engraved on a stone at the entrance: 1776. In times past, the cave was also used as a snowpit, accumulating snow in the winter months and then reselling it in the warmer months. The cave was then expanded, steps were dug into the lava, and holes were drilled in the top to facilitate the accumulation of snow.
