He was <strong>one of the pioneers in the field of volcanology<\/strong>, he made important studies on several volcanoes giving special importance to <strong>Etna<\/strong>.\n<br><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deutsche-biographie.de\/sfz77761.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wolfgang Sartorius von Waltershausen<\/a> came from a wealthy family and showed an early interest in science. During his university studies in G\u00f6ttingen, he pursued mathematics, physics and then turned to <strong>mineralogy <\/strong>and <strong>geology<\/strong>. He received teachings from important academic figures such as Wilhelm Eduard Weber and Carl Friedrich Gauss, known for their contributions to the fields of physics and mathematics.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4f6badf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4f6badf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Scientific studies and works of Wolfgang Sartorius<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c8181a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9c8181a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSartorius von Waltershausen initiated an extensive <strong>campaign of scientific studies on Etna<\/strong> in Sicily, with the intention of writing a paper on the volcano&#8217;s geology. His study trips to Sicily, from 1834 to 1837 and again from 1838 to 1843, resulted in <strong>detailed topographical surveys<\/strong> and in-depth <strong>geological analyses of Etna<\/strong>. He collaborated with several experts, including architect Roos, astronomer Peters, and architect and archaeologist Saverio Cavallari. The main result of his research was the <strong>Publication of the work &#8220;Atlas des Aetna&#8221;<\/strong> (Atlas of Etna), between 1844 and 1861, containing detailed topographical and geological maps, illustrations of the volcano&#8217;s structure, and prints depicting views of the studied area, representing an unprecedented effort in the context of volcanological studies at the time.\n<br><br>\nAmong his most important works we can mention (in chronological order):\n<ul>\n \t<li><em>vber die submarinen vulkanische Ausbr\u00fcche in der Terti\u00e4r-Formation des Val di Noto<\/em> (G\u00f6ttingen 1846);<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Physisch-geographische Skizze von Island<\/em> (G\u00f6ttingen 1853);<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Atlas des Aetna<\/em> (Weimar 1848-61);<\/li>\n \t<li><em>\u00dcbner die vulkan. His important <strong>work in processing and integrating<\/strong> these manuscripts culminated in <strong>1880<\/strong> with the <strong>publication of the work &#8220;Der Aetna<\/strong>&#8220;. This two-volume work summarized the studies conducted by Sartorius on Etna and integrated them with Lasaulx&#8217;s additions, helping to keep the original research work alive and up to date.\n<br><br>\n<strong>Wolfgang Sartorius<\/strong> von Waltershausen&#8217;s<strong> geological descriptions<\/strong> of Etna, including details on surrounding areas such as Patern\u00f2, Biancavilla, Adern\u00f2 and Bronte, provided <strong>a fundamental basis for understanding the volcanic geology of the region<\/strong>. These studies have also included references to ancient inscriptions and monuments, contributing to a more comprehensive view of the history and geology of the area.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-84a2bc6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"84a2bc6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Sartorius Mountains on Mount Etna<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b05e9a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8b05e9a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-15842 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dreamisland.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Sartorius-Estate-150x150.webp\" alt=\"Craters Mounts Sartorius in the summer\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>\n\nIn <strong>January 1865<\/strong>, at 1700 meters on the northeastern slope of Etna, a <strong>complex of three major volcanic cones<\/strong> and other secondary complex of three major volcanic cones formed, generating a lava flow that reached as high as 850 meters.
