Etna Cable Car – History, Prices, Timetable

Cabine della Funivia dell'Etna

History of the Etna Cable Car

Located in Rifugio Sapienza on the southern slope of the volcano, the Etna Cable Car links 1920 meters of altitude with 2500 m.
Construction began in the late 1950s and was inaugurated in 1966.
In the original layout there was an intermediate station at 2500 m and a station at 2930 m. Etna’s violent eruptions cause the stations to be destroyed several times, resulting in periods of inactivity. The last eruption that damaged the facilities was in 2001; the cable car in its current form was opened in 2004.
